Tonys, thanks for this. My replies seem to be coming at the bottom of the page so apols for that. I'll try to fix today. I really don't disagree with anything you have to say here - and you've said it all very elegantly. Joey Barton will be punished by the terms of his own sport. It simply seems mad to me that people want apply wider moral imperatives in a way which seems wholly inappropriate. On contact sports - I played for my country (a very long time ago) in a contact sport yet my only sporting injuries have come from football. It's a contact sport whether the rules say it or not.

On that we agree. It is not a morality play - it is a pantomime. We NEED the bad guy so we have someone to boo! However, that doesn't mean we have to condone it. Perhaps we should all accept that we want different things from the game and, in the end, none of us are to be completely satisfied. I agree there are far more important things to get annoyed about.

Eric, I have to take issue with a couple of your points.

First of all, football is not a "contact sport". Boxing, Rugby football, American football, Lacrosse, Judo, Tae-kwan-do, Water polo; these are contact sports. Football (soccer) is not a contact sport as any contact is minimal and incidental to the game.

Second, as I understand the incident, it was not part of the normal run of play, but was as a result of a decision to penalise him; in other words, it was unsportsmanlike conduct.

Yes he is a professional; so what? The rules do not change based on status. Any attempt to deliberately injure someone has to examined and if found to be a cause for concern, the person concerned should be punished. Behaviour like this is wholly unacceptable at any level, and professionals should be held to a higher standard.

I could question your assertion that these players are "super talented"; personally I feel that there are far too many players that have over blown egos without the skills to justify their beliefs. You may think that these people are paid to play; you could not be more wrong. They should play because they WANT to play; they are paid to spend their time improving their skills to make themselves better players.

People do pay to watch sport and in many cases, it is a great deal of money. Most do not want to see men throwing temper tantrums that would be unacceptable in a 3 year old child. If someone pays good money for a product or service and the standard is not acceptable, they can demand an explanation or redress of their grievance; there is nothing "daft" about this, it is the law.

Have you forgotten about the recent Kony social media campaign? That seemed to catch on, but didn't do much good either.

Could it be that public outrage in the UK will have little impact on African politics?

Eric, you're an elected representative - what are YOU doing about the situation in the Congo?

It's part of your job to tackle the issue if you think it's important.

It's not your job to tell people what they should and shouldn't be expressing opinions on.

I also think you're overestimating the amount of time it takes to send a tweet about Barton. It's 30 seconds then on with your life.

'Part and Parcel of the game' - so why he was immediately ejected from the game? The last time I looked at the rules, violence was by no means 'Part and Parcel of the game'. It was, and is, against the rules of the game. Are we to accept that the bunch of cloggers kicking lumps out of each other on over the park on a Sunday morning are the best we can hope for in football? As a player and a coach I am expected to lead by example. So why aren't the pros? Yes, we all lose our rag during games, I certainly have in the past, but after the event a genuine apology and an effort to change one's attitude is not an unreasonable expectation is it? If we are to put this in perspective, it is certainly not related to political violence around the world - it is a game. So is a game really reason enough to thump someone?

But I fully agree with Mike's comment that assaulting people in football is not tolerable. Barton should gain a lengthy punishment by the FA, then the police if they deem it worthy. The incidents are there on camera, so I doubt evidence would be an issue. Barton is going to have a long time on the sidelines to think about it, hopefully he and QPR donate his wages to a good charity in the meanwhile.
